Fiery, Fatal I-80 Car-Van Crash in Hackensack, New Jersey

On Behalf of | Jan 6, 2012 | Car Accidents

Eastbound Route 80 in Hackensack has reopened after a fatal motor vehicle crash in the early hours of the morning closed the interstate for four hours. At about 3 am, a Honda Accord and Ford Econoline Van crashed and one vehicle ignited into a firey blaze near Exit 66. One person was killed in the New Jersey car crash.

The cause of the car-van collision is still under investigation and police did not release the name of the person who was killed in the crash. New Jersey and New York fatal accident lawyers who’ve worked with family members of crash victims understand the frustration of waiting for authorities to reconstruct an accident scene to determine the cause of their loss. While nothing can bring back a lost loved one, explanations of events often are helpful as families try to heal after a loss.

Already this year, eight fatal crashes have occurred throughout New Jersey, taking the lives of five drivers, one passenger and two pedestrians, according to New Jersey State Police (NJSP) statistics. The NJSP maintains a division, the Fatal Accident Investigation Unit, devoted to investigating these types of motor vehicle accidents.

But, when one driver causes injury to, or in the I-80 crash the death of, another, it’s often not just the police who will need to investigate a crash scene. A New York or New Jersey auto accident lawyer should also be involved right away. Ensuring that you are able to recover from the at-fault driver and his or her insurance company may depend on whether a connection can be established between the driver’s actions and the cause of your injury. While this may seem simple, and even quite obvious, to someone who’s been injured in a car accident or to the family members of one who was killed, an insurance company may not see it as such.

If you’ve been involved in a car accident, the first thing you should do is seek medical attention for your injuries. If a loved one was killed in a New York or New Jersey car crash, or after you’ve gotten the medical attention you need, you should contact an experienced car accident or wrongful death attorney in your area. It may seem that you should contact the insurance company first, but you may be limiting your ability to gain a full financial recovery by doing so.
