Bergen County Accident Claims Life of 17-Year-Old Boy

Roadways are a dangerous enough place for drivers, but they can be even more treacherous for pedestrians. The death of a pedestrian who is struck by a motor vehicle is an irreplaceable loss, but in certain situations the pedestrian's surviving family may be able to bring a case for wrongful death to help compensate them for damages incurred in the fatal accident.

A recent accident in Bergen County involving a motor vehicle and a pedestrian resulted in the death of a 17-year-old boy. Officials responded to a report that a person had been struck by a car and pronounced the boy dead at the scene. The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene and police collected statements from witnesses. The accident is currently under investigation.

Anyone who operates a motor vehicle owes a duty of reasonable care to others on the roadway. Drivers who fail to exercise that duty can cause accidents that result in injuries to another person may be found negligent and held liable for any damages.

Additionally, an action for wrongful death may be available when someone is killed as a result of another person's negligence. Among the many factors considered in determining damages in a wrongful death case are the victim's conscious pain and suffering, funeral and medical expenses, lost future earnings and emotional suffering of the victim's family.

The loss of a close family member is tragic and unthinkable. Although no monetary award can ever replace a loved one, surviving family members should be aware of possible compensation available to them through a wrongful death lawsuit.
