Causes of TBIs

On Behalf of | Sep 20, 2018 | Personal Injury

A traumatic brain injury is a serious event that could significantly affect a person’s health and well-being. Even after the initial injury, a person could suffer complications, like seizures, damaged blood vessels, fluid buildup in the brain, infections, vertigo and headaches. Therefore, it is important for people in New Jersey to recognize situations where they may suffer a TBI, as well as understand their legal options.

There are numerous ways a person could suffer a TBI. Common causes of TBIs are motor vehicle accidents and slip-and-fall accidents. Being struck on the head or injuries in a sports accident can also cause a TBI.

Sometimes, these TBIs are truly accidents. However, often a person suffers a TBI due to the negligent or reckless act of another. For example, a motorist could be hit by a drunk driver. Or, a person with a dangerous occupation or who is playing a dangerous sport may not be provided proper safety gear. Or, a spill on a grocery store floor could go unnoticed, making the floor slippery. In these incidents, it is possible that the TBI was due to the fault of another person.

When a person suffers a TBI because of another’s negligence, the injured victim may want to seek compensation from the responsible party. By filing a personal injury suit, victims of TBIs can pursue compensation for medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering and more. If successful, the victim of the TBI may be awarded the financial resources they need to cover the costs of their TBI and adjust to their new life post-injury.
