New Jersey Teen Gets Six Years in Fatal DWI Crash

On Behalf of | May 29, 2012 | Wrongful Death

To a parent, there is nothing worse than having your child be senselessly killed at a young age. Sadly, this happens much too often in New Jersey when teen drivers make the decision to get behind the wheel after drinking alcohol.

Earlier this month, a 19-year-old Red Bank man was sentenced to six years in prison after pleading guilty to criminal charges stemming from a crash that killed his 18-year-old friend and left another 19-year-old seriously injured.

The accident occurred in the spring of 2011. According to police, the man consumed a significant amount of alcohol and marijuana and then drove his vehicle nearly 75 mph in a 25 mph zone. He ultimately lost control of the vehicle, which left the roadway and hit a tree. The impact was so severe that the car actually split in two. Two hours after the accident, the driver’s blood-alcohol level was determined to be 0.314, almost four times the legal limit.

Following the accident, the driver was charged with a number of criminal offenses including second-degree vehicular homicide and third-degree vehicular assault. After being released from prison, the man will be required to serve three years of parole and relinquish his driver’s license for five years.

New Jersey Teen Driver Accidents

It is a sad reality that many teenagers seem to feel invincible at times when their safety is most at risk. A lot of young drivers don’t understand just how dangerous driving under the influence can be. We all need to do more to make sure our teens know that it is never acceptable to get behind the wheel after consuming any amount of alcohol.
