Protest Planned After Student Killed by NJ Transit Bus

On Behalf of | Aug 13, 2012 | Mass Transit Accidents

Last month, a New Jersey college student was killed after being run over by a NJ Transit bus in Bloomfield Township. Now, his family and friends are planning a protest on the one-month anniversary of the young man’s death. They claim that the transit accident was caused by the bus driver’s negligence and say that neither the government nor NJ Transit are doing enough to address the situation.

According to police reports, the young man was rushing to catch a bus when he was struck and became crushed underneath the vehicle. It is still unclear whether he slipped and fell underneath the bus or whether he fell under the bus after first being struck. The victim’s family claims that the young man was standing at the bus stop when the bus jumped the curb and hit him.

The family also claims to have seen a video of the incident that proves negligence on the part of the Township, bus driver and NJ transit. They hope that the protest will draw attention to the case and spur investigators to act more quickly.

Proving liability in the case may be difficult because of all of the different parties involved. Although the bus was being operated on behalf of NJ Transit, the driver was not an NJ Transit employee. Instead, he worked for a company called Community Transportation Company. Community Transportation is a private company that rents NJ Transit buses. The family and their attorneys will likely need to conduct a significant investigation to determine exactly where the fault lies.
