Leading causes of car accidents

On Behalf of | Apr 23, 2021 | Car Accidents

Auto accidents occur all too often on the streets and highways throughout the U.S. Happening as a result of various driver-related and other factors, these wrecks often result in serious injuries or death for those involved.

Some of the leading causes of car accidents involve driver behaviors, and thus, may not occur if motorists take the appropriate care when behind the wheel.

Distracted driving

Distracted drivers may contribute to the occurrence of motor vehicle wrecks. Distractions for drivers include those activities or behaviors that take their minds off driving, hands off the wheel or eyes off the road. Diverting their attentions from the task of driving may impair people’s ability to safely operate their vehicles and react appropriately to situations and dangers on the road.

Speeding

Excessive speed plays a contributing role in causing numerous auto accidents each year. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 26% of all motor vehicle fatalities in 2018 had speed as a contributing factor. Driving too fast for the road or conditions may result in an increased potential for drivers to lose control of their vehicles, the need for increased stopping distance, a reduction in the effectiveness of vehicle occupant protective equipment, and increased collision force.

Drunk driving

According to the NHTSA, drunk driving also frequently contributes to causing motor vehicle crashes. Approximately one person dies every 52 minutes due to alcohol-involved accidents in the U.S. Drinking alcohol may affect people’s bodies, causing effects such as decreased judgment, reduced coordination, decreased concentration and slowed reaction times.

If negligence or carelessness on the part of other drivers cause their auto accidents, those injured may have a right to pursue financial compensation for their injury-associated losses.
