What are signs of a traumatic brain injury?

On Behalf of | Jul 1, 2021 | Personal Injury

After getting involved in an incident that causes head injury, you need to keep your eye peeled. Brain injuries often stem from head injury accidents. Some of them are mild and only require minimal care. Others, like traumatic brain injuries (TBI) can cause problems for months or years to come.

The first step is knowing how to identify TBIs. After this, you can get the care you need as fast as possible. So what are the red flags you should watch for?

Physical TBI signs

Mayo Clinic takes a look at the signs that might indicate a traumatic brain injury. First, pay attention to physical signs. These are often easiest to note. A victim may experience periods of disordered consciousness, first. This can include blacking out, passing out, fainting or even falling into a coma.

If they remain awake, you can still note physical signs. For example, they may complain of a piercing and painful headache. They may also struggle with balance. If nauseous, you could tell if they vomit, which many TBI victims do. You may also notice clear spinal fluid leaking from the ears or nose, which is a dire sign that requires rapid treatment.

Changes in behavior

You might notice behavioral differences, too. Victims will often behave in erratic, unusual ways that do not align with their personality. Some may get anxious and stressed, suffering from emotional breakdowns. Others get aggressive and agitated, lashing out at those trying to help them. Keep in mind that they are acting strangely due to the head injury and get them help quickly.

After seeking medical care, you will also want to seek legal help. This can get you compensation for your damages so you can afford healthcare.
